Your art weekend before Gallery Weekend

Berlin’s top art events for this weekend in Berlin (April 24th – 26th 2014):Openings at Duve; Morgen Contemporary, Pictoplasma festival and open air street art

Vernissage / Niki Elbe ‚Safari‘

Friday 25th April – 7pm

An intense palette of colour and bold, fantastical scenes of worlds rooted in the everyday are just some of Berlin based artist Niki Elbe’s trademarks. Born in Germany and raised in South Africa, Elbe studied at the Berlin University of the Arts during the nineties, before being exhibited extensively in Germany and internationally. Elbe’s forthcoming show at Morgen Contemporary will feature an introduction by art historian Julika Nehb, and the artist herself will be present.

Morgen Contemporary // Ackerstrasse 162, 10115 Berlin

Vernissage / Evan Gruzis ‚Atavistic Zen‘

Saturday 26th April – 6pm

Don’t let the name put you off, we could all do with some elements of zen in our everyday lives. A Buddhist concept which emphasizes the value of meditation and intuition, zen is incorporated into American artist Evan Gruvis‘ latest show at Duve, which will feature paintings and a sound installation. Influenced by Japanese Zen Buddhist teacher Dōgen Zenji, Gruvis seeks to visualize just some of the tension found in moments of chaos – something which seems to be never far away.

Duve Berlin // Gitschiner Strasse 94/94a (Entrance D, Floor 2) , 10969 Berlin

Festival / Pictoplasma Festival and Conference on Contemporary Character Design and Art

Wednesday 30th April – Sunday 4th May

Just ahead of this year’s Gallery Weekend, Pictoplasma will celebrate its ten year anniversary in Berlin. A network of thousands of artists worldwide all interested in contemporary, character driven visual art, Pictoplasma is a publishing company, events organiser and international network all in one. This edition of their festival and conference on contemporary character design and art will feature an immersive program of over 20 artist presentations, 100 plus animations, an exhibition, a ’special‘ portrait gallery group show (no we’re not sure either) and an inordinate amount of confetti.
