Vernissage / The Culture And Art of Skateboarding

Skateboarding is not just a pastime but a way of life. Delve into the skateboarding scene with this extensive exhibition at Stattbad, showcasing some of the Skateboard Museum’s archive before it’s re-opening in Berlin in 2014. Amongst a photo exhibition and all the excitement there will also be a special exhibition by the 3eck collective featuring a skateable puzzle piece and the photographs of Berlin based photographers. Festival / Tanz im August

In case you needed an excuse to dance, here is your perfect alibi: the 25th edition of German contemporary dance festival Tanz im August. Taking place across the city choreographers and dancers from all over the world present a jam packed programme presenting not only the best of contemporary dance but also acknowledging older dance luminaries such as Trisha Brown and Steve Paxton. Although most events start Friday 16th August, don’t miss the video installation kicking off the festival tonight!

Vernissage / Meret Oppenheim Retrospektive

Martin-Gropius-Bau will celebrate the life of iconic female artist Meret Oppenheim with a major retrospective marking the centenary of the artist’s birth in Berlin in October. Displaying the eclectic body of work from her lifetime the show will document the various fascinating themes Oppenheim loved to revisit: magic objects, dreamy mythological scenes and metamorphoses between the sexes and humans and animals merely the tip of the iceberg.

Whether hungover from your Friday night antics or not, there’s no excuse not to attend this fun packed photo marathon. Arranged by Fotostrasse, the photography project and brain child of two photographers in Berlin, the event encourages locals and visitors alike to embark on a journey exploring Berlin’s nooks and crannies. This weekend the group’s destination will be altstadt köpenick in Treptow, a good excuse to venture further than your normal city limits. NB: Professional cameras etc are not required!
