If you think that advertising photography is just “advertising” and not art, it is time to visit “Shapes & Symbols”. The exhibition presents a selection of iconic images from the 50’s and 60’s made by the American photographer Bert Stern. If before him advertising photos were pretty much an illustration for a text, after him images started to be much more seductive and communicative to consumers. Stern began his career as an assistant at Flair. In 1946, while working at Look, he met and befriended Stanley Kubrick, for whom he would later shoot the iconic images of Sue Lyon as Lolita. After serving in the US Army, Stern returned to New York and began working on advertising campaigns Many of the photos displayed at Galerie 36 were never showcased as artwork, only printed in magazines.

Haus am Lützowplatz // Heiner Franzen – Großes Gesichtsfeld

For his first institutional solo exhibition in Berlin, Heiner Franzen transformed the Haus am Lützowplatz into a walk-in movie projector. “Großes Gesichtsfeld” (“Great Range of Vision” in English) is an all over the house installation in a soft pink coloured carpet. The artist, who is known for procedural drawings, sculptures, ground covering installations and video art, will take you on a journey without beginning nor end. Every image is the reflection of another, drawings turning into films and films turning into pictures. An in your face intense experience!

In the 90’s Berlin was still recovering and rebuilding itself after the fall of the wall when Eva & Adele came from the future to be part of our time. Lucky us! In the last 25 years, the duo is doing their “future”, an art concept and existence “over the boundaries of gender”, and smiling to the world. Now, me Collectors Room showcases a retrospective “L’Amour du Risque” with the best of their transgressive work, which includes performance, videos (like WINGS I, II, III from 1997 and 1998), photos, drawings, sculpture, installations and clothing. Plus: for the first time it is possible to see their costume logbooks (more than 160 sheets!). For this exhibitions, they also created a bottle of perfume from Grasse, France, a wristwatch Swatch and handbags by PB 0110, a label by Philipp Bree.

At “Mater Natura” the Belgian duo SKAWAGER mixes catholic iconographies with animal’s organs and bones in a kind of relic from a cabinet of curiosities. The fact that the show is in the basement of Luisa Catucci Gallery, a space called Project Room, brings even more excitement. But don’t get it wrong. Although their combination of taxidermy, painting and sculpture can be compared with a Wunderkammer, here the aim is also to awaken the thinking about ecological and environmental issues (critical: the animals used in their compositions are death for natural causes). Also takes place in the gallery the exhibition “Spielen mit Geistern” by the Italian painter Andrea Mariconti. Extra tip: in front of Luisa’s gallery is Gordon, a café and records shop with a delicious Shakshuka, give it a try!

Time patterns, narratives and co-existence. It is that kind of reflection that the visitor will find at the exhibition “Variations on Time”. Kapwani Kiwanga, the winner of the 2018 Frieze Artist Award, presents his series Subduction Studies (2015-2017). Inspired by the theory of Pangaea Ultima, a possibility of a supercontinent occurring again, Kiwanga took photos at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris of rock specimens from the Northern coast of Africa and Spain and folded the images together. The result suggests Europe and Africa connected in a new geopolitical perspective. Works of Susanne Winterling complete the show. The visitor is put face to face with images of dinoflagellates, microscopic marine plankton organisms, which are bioluminescent when mechanically activated. Suspended and enlarged, they advocate an alternative way to imagine communication and community in the future.
